Designer Spotlight - Freya Moses
As you may have seen on our website, we recently launched the exclusive Hero&Cape X Momomoses capsule collection designed by illustrator Freya Moses. Well we caught up the the talented Miss Moses and picked her brain a little!
What is your day job?
I am a senior technician for screen printed and digitally printed textiles at Falmouth University
How did you get into your job?
I was actually a student on the course and I was lucky enough to get the job pretty soon after graduating
What do you like best about what you do?
I get to be surrounded by creativity every day which is really exciting, no two days are the same! It’s so cool having such a hands on, practical job doing what I love to do – print!
Tell us a bit about your collaboration project with Hero&Cape
I first discovered Hero & Cape on Instagram and loved their style. I thought my stuff would go really well with theirs so I just got in touch. I am really up for collaborations as they are such a good way of getting to know other creative people. I used to be too scared to get in touch with companies but now I just go for it and it is really paying off.
Who or what is the main inspiration behind your work?
That question is like being asked what my favourite sandwich is, there are just too many to choose from! Memes, plastic, pink, Keith Haring, glitter, dreams, cat gifs, fun, Japan, subcultures, Memphis Group…
A lot of the time though my designs are just stuff from my head!
Which piece of your work are you most proud of?
I have recently done an illustration to be included in a book for a well known restaurant. The book will be getting published early next year so I’m pretty proud of that!
What is your favourite/most important possession?
I recently got a puppy called Panda, she is the coolest dog I have ever met and sits with me in the studio helping me with my work.
What one thing do you do better than anyone you know?
I would like to answer with something really cool but I think I will have to say worry! I am a born worrier but I like to think I use all of my nervous energy to be a more productive designer.
What was the last movie you watched and what do you give it out of 10?
It was Finding Nemo and I’m proud to say I would give it 10/10!
What would be the title of your autobiography?
I think I would have to call it ‘Eternal Teenager’ I am terrified about having to be an adult one day so I’m putting it off for as long as possible.
What is your life long ambition?
To run my own print studio full time designing and selling my own work. I have my own studio at the moment where I do all of my work (I mostly procrastinate!) but I don’t get to spend a lot of time in there at the moment. I also want to go to Japan, I am so inspired by all of the subcultures over there and I want to see it all in real life!
What would be your specialist subject on Mastermind?
Probably something involving matching chocolates to their wrappers…haha!!

Keepin' It "Up North" | #HeroAndCapeAW14 Photoshoot

We must've typed the word "excited" about five hundred times on social media this week! Ok, maybe that's a slight exaggeration!.... But we really have been eager to reveal to everyone what the Hero&Cape team has been working on!
Behind the scenes, we've been drawing away in our sketchbooks for months and then rendering them suitable for screenprinting on to the cotton t-shirts. That's the fun and creative part, the best bit about the job! There's a whole bunch of awesome Hero&Cape prints for you this season including our take on the fast food fashion trend!
Things got real when the process of planning our A/W '14 shoot went underway. The pressure was on when we went through the list of things we had to consider such as budget, location, logistics, make-up artist, models, photographer... it's the part we always find overwhelming but we knew what style we wanted (fresh, fun, doesn't take itself too seriously) and with some careful planning, we had to believe that we could do it!
Being a brand that is based in the north, the idea of keeping everything "up north" appealed to us. So, last week, we packed the car up with our kit and set off for a two hour drive to Manchester to meet the rest of the team. Upon first impression, we honestly couldn't be happier with the choices we eventually made. For people who have only just met, we got on like we had always known each other and we think that really comes through in the work we had done together. We worked as a team and as a result, we achieved amazing things! The whole day was really positive and super productive - we got things done with time to spare! It felt more like a group of friends hanging out as opposed to "work"! WHAT A DREAM TEAM!
The best thing about this campaign is that we placed it in to the hands of fashion bloggers. Amazing, right?! And it is by far the best shoot we have done so far because if there's ever a group of people who are passionate about fashion and photography, it's bloggers!
First up, the photographer we chose to collaborate with was one we had known since Hero&Cape launched back in 2011. Jefferson from School Boy Couture photographed our whole lookbook and he had the technical abilities to carry the entire project through. Being a local to Manchester, he was our tour guide for the day too! We've admired his work for years and it was great to finally work with someone we believe in.
We also have Sarah from Temporary:Secretary Blog film and edit a video for the campaign. She also set the styling direction too. Capturing the behind-the-scenes footage, she put a video together which you can watch on YouTube here. It was the first time she had done anything like this, so had been trying to perfect the video for days and days!
Now on to the faces of our campaign! The beautiful people! Our female model, Crystal Lily, is a fashion blogger on Five Foot Four Blog who does modelling on the side. We also had our South London boy, Gareth, who isn't a stranger to shoots either as he has previously been in several music videos with the likes of Jess Glynne, Lily Allen and Union J! Impressive, right?! The interesting thing about both of the models we worked with was that they were both under the model industry height requirements but we honestly couldn't give two hoots about the rules because size or height shouldn't be an issue in fashion (rules are there to be broken, anyway!). But as you can tell, our models were AMAZING and they totally worked it!
Last but not least, Lucy, our hair and make-up artist who helped the models get photo-ready for the day. Lucy's got some skills and the "beauty blogger" in Sarah (@tempsec) wanted to sit and watch her do beauty magic! The best thing was that Lucy was passionate about her work and made sure everything was looking fresh!
We are really proud of this collection, and enjoyed working with the #HeroAndCapeAW14 team. Everyone took a leap of faith and we think it pulled off.

Hope you're all having a fabulous Summer so far! We've had a pretty rocky one so far, haven't we? Currently caught in the middle of a thunderstorm so there's no better time to catch up with some things on the old blog! (finger crossed the storm doesn't cause a power cut whilst typing this...)
We have a bunch of new stuff on the website, as you might have noticed! The web design guys are going for a rainbow coloured shop page, just to be a little different from the norm!
At the moment, we are really in to surface print and an all-over design. We've equipped ourselves with a new screen printing kit which is taking up a large percentage of the studio! But everything is still drawn by hand first before it's all screen printed on our organic tshirts, so there's still that element of illustration. ;-) Our latest designs are inspired by current Summer trends such as tropical prints and 90's fashion.

On a Sunday, us northerners love a traditional roast dinner, but it appears that the cool kids in London have swapped the meat and gravy with some fancy pancakes. What's the fuss about The Breakfast Club, we wondered? All this hyped up talk about them has made me hungry and on our recent trip to London, we couldn't help but pop ourselves there and munch on the most talked about pancakes in the Country!
This is the type of place that the team at Hero&Cape love to hang out. We appreciate it's little quirks and most importantly, we've got a lot of appreciation for the food! The pancakes, eggs and sausage was cooked to perfection and the little shot of syrup added something naughty to our Sunday lunch. Takes on a whole new meaning to the phrase 'breakfast of champions"

Let's Do A Make-Over!
Our web team has been having sleepless nights fun this past fortnight when they undertook the task of giving our website a bit of a make-over. It is something we've been working on for a while now and we're so pleased to finally say that the new site is now LIVE! Woop woop!
You'll find a more stripped down homepage, we've de-cluttered it. Another decision we took was to lose the hand-drawn logo font, which feels quite strange at the moment because handwritten typeface is our thing, something we've been quite passionate about in the past. But... it was time to grow up and give Hero&Cape a slicker, tidier look (but don't worry, we're still going to be injecting lots of fun with our hand-drawn T-shirt designs!).
